Tom Yam Goong
This dish, also known as tom yum is soup traditionally made with shrimp. You may know it by its Anglicized name, hot and sour soup. This soup takes only about an hour to make and uses ingredients typically found in a regular grocery store. Usually made with chicken broth, lemon grass, lime juice, dried chilies and shrimp, this central Thai dish has a slightly spicy flavor with a sour element to make the freshness really pop. Pad Thai is probably one of the most recognized Thai foods. The base of this dish is a good sized pile of rice noodles that are stir-fried with fish sauce, lime juice, a bit of sugar, bean sprouts, egg, chives, and of course peanuts. Proteins like chicken, seafood, tofu, or pork often accompany this dish.
Thai Fried Rice
Fried rice in Thailand is made in a variety of different ways. Traditionally it is served with chilies in fish sauce, green onions, cucumber and fresh lime. If you’re over Chinese fried rice, give this fresher, lighter dish a try.
Moo Nam Tok
Moo nam tok is a salad with Thai inspirations. With roots in northern Thailand, the popularity of this dish can be contributed to its ease of preparation. Grilled pork is sliced thin and seasoned with chili powder. This gets served along with shallots, roasted ground rice, lime juice and fish sauce. It is a bit salty, sour and spicy. One of the characteristics of Thai cooking is its combination of three or more flavor profiles, and this dish is an excellent demonstration of that ability. It is also relatively cheap to make and has many health benefits.
To make green curry, you can start off with nearly any protein like fish, pork, chicken, or tofu. The rest of the curry usually has coconut milk, eggplant, green curry paste, fish sauce and palm sugar. Other green vegetables or even fruits also pair well with this dish. The ingredients for this curry vary widely depending on the chef. It is usually paired with rice and is served not as a full meal, but as part of a larger meal. An excellent way to serve any curry is with roti, an Indian flatbread that can be used to soak up the extra curry sauce.
Massaman curry is a red curry made with coconut milk, onions, potatoes, peanuts, bay leaves, cardamom, and other ingredients at the discretion of the chef. Serve this dish with beef, duck, chicken or tofu.
